Active Life Podiatry now proudly offers Ultrasound as part of our clinical assessment to effectively assist in diagnosing and understanding the majority of foot conditions.
Following a year-long course at Brunel University, Clinic Owner, John Durkin has completed a Postgraduate Certification in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound of the Foot & Ankle.
As well as providing increased patient care, this treatment enhances anatomy knowledge as well as specific pathologies of the foot and ankle.
What is it?
Ultrasound imaging is a diagnostic tool which sends out high frequency sound waves to the tissues and these rebound at different rates to a computer and from this an image is formed.
The process increases efficiency with assisting with diagnosis across patients suffering with pain and injuries.
Ultrasound scanning gives a real time, dynamic picture of injury and conditions without causing any pain or side effects that happen with x-rays which emit radiation.
Ultrasound scanning can help with the following:
- Assessment of pain in the foot or ankle
- Limitations with foot or ankle mobility
- Diagnose what’s causing discomfort or swelling
- Identify conditions like plantar fasciitis, Morton’s neuroma, or plantar fibroma and bursitis
- Detect soft tissue lumps like ganglia or lipomas
- Check for joint or tendon issues like tendonitis, or tendon tears
- Diagnose other problems like heel spurs, tarsal tunnel syndrome, muscle damage, or blood flow issues.
- Some bone conditions, like arthritis, and stress fractures can also be evaluated.
We use Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) as part of our clinical assessment and may use this to support our findings and then form a treatment plan.
Our podiatrists are appropriately qualified, and are accredited by Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE). Please note our scans are not formally reported, as we are not radiologists.
Who is it for?
Ultrasound scanning is for those experiencing pain or injury. This advanced diagnostic tool provides a good picture of injury and conditions without causing any pain or side effects that happen with x-rays which emit radiation.
Ultrasound scanning is the starting point for understanding the cause of your problem, what treatment is needed or whether further investigations or referral to other healthcare providers are necessary.
Benefits
- Rapid, noninvasive diagnosis
- No pain or side effects
- Quick and effective
- Used in guided injection therapy
- Allows us to make a better informed treatment plan
- Used to assess the effectiveness of a treatment
“Many of our patients see us for ongoing painful conditions like plantar fasciitis or sudden injury such as a sprain; ultrasound can greatly assist in the diagnosis, location and extent of the problem thus enabling better management and outcomes for our patients. We’re one of the few London clinics to offer this service and it’s important to us to continue to evolve and give the highest quality care to our patients.“
