Things we’re ghosting this October: 5 foot-care habits to leave behind

12 October 2026

Halloween is the perfect time for a little ghosting. At Active Life Podiatry, we’re saying goodbye to the habits that put foot care at the bottom of the list.

From ignoring recurring pain to hanging on to trainers past their best, small habits can make a difference to how your feet feel. Here are five we’re leaving behind this October and simple steps to take instead.

1. Hoping foot pain will just disappear

That recurring heel pain deserves more than another “I’ll see how it feels tomorrow”.

Some mild foot pain improves with self-care, but pain that keeps returning, gets worse or interrupts your usual activities deserves attention.

Take steps: Pause activities that aggravate the pain and book an appointment with our expert team. We can assess your symptoms, explore what may be causing them and recommend the next steps for you.

2. Running in worn-out trainers

Still hanging on to that ancient pair? It might be time for a closer look.

Check for worn soles, damaged linings and changes in comfort or fit. Worn-out footwear can contribute to discomfort, but shoes are only one part of the picture: changes in your running distance or intensity matter too.

Take steps: Check your trainers before your next run. If they are damaged or no longer comfortable, consider replacing them. If running hurts, stop and speak to a podiatrist rather than assuming new shoes will solve it.

3. Choosing trainers just for the looks

A good colourway is a bonus. A good fit comes first.

Look for enough space for your toes and a secure fit that avoids rubbing or slipping. Choose footwear suited to your activity and try it on with your usual socks.

Take steps: Walk around in both shoes before buying. They should feel comfortable without pinching or pressure. If you’re unsure what to look for, our podiatrists can advise on footwear suited to your feet and activities.

4. Leaving foot care at the bottom of the list

Your feet keep you moving through busy days. Give them a little time in return.

Wash them daily, dry carefully between your toes and moisturise dry skin, avoiding the spaces between your toes. Check for blisters, cuts and changes to your skin or nails.

Take steps: Make a quick foot check part of your evening routine. If reaching or seeing your feet is difficult, use a mirror or ask someone to help. For troublesome nails, painful hard skin or concerns about a change, book an appointment with our team.

5. Self-diagnosing with Dr Google

A search result can explain a symptom. It cannot examine your feet.

Similar symptoms can have different causes, so online information is a starting point rather than a diagnosis. An assessment helps you understand what may be happening and which treatment options are appropriate.

Take steps: Note where the pain is, when it began and what makes it better or worse. Bring those details to your podiatry appointment so we can help you make sense of your symptoms.

When should you see a podiatrist for foot pain?

Book an assessment if foot pain keeps returning, gets worse or affects your walking, exercise or everyday activities. You can also seek advice about uncomfortable footwear, troublesome nails or changes to the skin on your feet.

At Active Life Podiatry, we’ll listen to your concerns, examine your feet and explain your options, helping you take the next step with confidence.

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe pain, an inability to walk or a foot that looks misshapen after an injury. If you have diabetes and develop new foot pain or a wound, seek prompt medical advice.
